Phleg (pronounced plek) is the guy behind the name TerbujurKaku, an electronic musician born and raised in Surabaya, now chilling in Yogyakarta. Growing up, he was always surrounded by dangdut and funkot blasting everywhere, and that whole vibe ended up shaping the way he makes music. Then he smashed all those influences together with Breakcore, a bastard son of electronic music that mixes anything it wants and runs at breakneck speed.
When he dropped his “Megamix Album: Koplo Goes To Breakcore” back in 2010, some elitist electronic musicians in Indonesia weren’t exactly thrilled about his genre-smashing experiment. He threw in all kinds of samples, everything from Mighty Dub Katz’s Arikingking, to hype-intro MCs from live dangdut orchestras. Dangdut remixes with full-on biduan vocals got mashed up with Amen Breaks, kendang, funkot basslines, and gabber kicks. It left the dancefloor crowd confused in the best way—like, should they go full rave mode or just vibe with some good old goyang jempol?
